No it’s not any type of stock market crash or the day after Thanksgiving shopping, but given what happened yesterday and the two days prior in college football, “Black Monday” is definitely an appropriate name. Take a look at this list of coaches that were either fired or resigned from Saturday thru Monday:
Arkansas – Houston Nutt
Baylor – Guy Morriss
Colorado State - Sonny Lubick
Duke – Ted Roof
Georgia Tech – Chan Gailey
Michigan – Lloyd Carr
Ole Miss – Ed Orgeron
Nebraska – Bill Callahan
Northern Illinois – Joe Novak
Southern Miss – Jeff Bower
Southern Methodist – Phil Bennett
Texas A&M – Dennis Franchione
Washington State – Bill Doba
Now I can’t go into why each of these coaches were fired or resigned because I’m not familiar with all the situations, but there are a few I can talk about and speculate on who will be the next head man.
Arkansas – The handwriting was the on the wall with Nutt. From pre-game flyovers with “Fire Nutt” banners tailing the plane to the off-season fiasco involving the Springdale bunch. Brought in the talent, but stayed at a level of mediocrity. 1 out of every 5 years in the SEC Championship game shouldn’t be tolerated. The talent was there, now we need the leadership.
Possibilities
1. Jim Grobe - Wake Forest
2. Tommy Tuberville - Auburn
3. Lane Kiffin – Oakland Raiders
Michigan – This was an easy one. Lloyd Carr lost 6 out of 7 against the Buckeyes and 4 in a row. If he lost every other game and beat Ohio State, he might still have a job. Is there another college program that did less with the type of talent Michigan had? They are stockpiled every year and never seem to meet expectations.
Possibilities
1. Les Miles – LSU
2. Ron English – Michigan Assistant
3. Kirk Ferentz – Iowa
Nebraska – This program has fallen on its hardest of times. Bringing back Tom Osborne as an administrator is a good start, but hiring a quality coach is going to more important. Nebraska has had two losing seasons in 45 years, both engineered by Callahan. This was a no-brainer.
Hired - Bo Pelini - LSU
Ole Miss – Oregeron is known for being a tenacious recruiter, but those recruits haven’t turned into wins for Ole Miss. Winless in the SEC this year and losing records on a consistent basis doesn’t put you in favor with the powers that be.
Hired – Houston Nutt - Arkansas
