As promised last week, here are the nominees for this weeks "Goat of the Week"
1. Ed Orgeron - Head Coach Ole Miss - What was he thinking taking out Brent Schaeffer in the middle of the drive inside the redzone at the end of the first half. Seth Adams was completely ineffective the entire time he was in there. Schaeffer showed that his athleticism could cause all sorts of problems for the LSU defense, and led 2 successful drives including the one he was on before being take out on 2nd down. Adams subsequently threw and interception in the endzone, which was a turning point in the game. Ole Miss most likely would not have won the game, but the guy who was giving you the best opportunity to compete was taken out for no apparent reason. Just baffling.
2. Brian Billick - Head Coach Baltimore Ravens - Baltimore takes a 3 point lead with less than a minute to go. Everyone's thinking with Baltimore's defense, this game is a lock. With Josh Cribbs, the second best return man in the game behind Devin Hester, back deep for the Browns on the kickoff, there's no way Billick is going to kick it deep to him. What does he do? Kicks it deep to Cribbs and he makes a great return to near mid-field which leads to the game tying field goal. In overtime, kicking off again, you just got burnt once, there's no way Billick makes the same mistake again. What does he do? KICKS IT TO HIM AGAIN!!! Cribbs returns it close to mid-field again and Dawson kicks the game winning field go a few plays later.
3. Eric Johnson - TE New Orleans Saints - In the first half of the Saints game, their offense looked near impossible to stop. However, costly turnovers kept the Saints out of the endzone. Bush had his controversal fumble on the one. But Brees' interceptions were the worst. Twice, I repeat, twice, Eric Johnson, the pass catching tight end pickup from the 49ers had balls hit square off his hands, go up in the air, and be intercepted by the Texans. The first one happened in the first half while driving inside the Texans 30 yard line. The second one coming in the second half with the game very much for the Saints taking. If the Saints are going to spend money on free agents (i.e. Jason David and Eric Johnson) the fans should at least expect mediocrity. Don't do anything amazing, but just don't make mistakes.
If you have any more nominees please feel free to post them. Which one of these deserves the "Goat of the Week"?
