Heisman Hype or Hoax

November 17, 2007 11:13 by Pigskin_Stokes

After reading, B Webb's article. If you look at the last 12 years the best player in football doesn't always win the heisman trophy. In fact, the winner's pro career isn't that impressive. If you look at this list only a handful are dominating in the league. Last year Troy Smith was a perfect example. Darren McFadden is without a doubt the best footballplayer this year and was last year. However, do to his horrible coach and lack of play call for the Hogs he probably will be sitting in the same seat at NYC.  With Dixon out, that leaves a bunch of overrated prospects. While I think the offense with Tebow is amazing at Florida, there is reason why people quit running quarterbacks outside of the option. QB's can't hold up when you run them like a running back i.e: Tim Tebow's bum shoulder problems. Eddie George, Charles Woodson, Carson Palmer, and Reggie Bush are about the only ones who lived up to the "Heisman Hype." Now I know some of these guys have played in the NFL and that is commendable in itself, but I would like to see the voters get it right and the next heisman canidate live up to the hype.

1995 Eddie George Ohio State
1996 Danny Wuerffel Florida
1997 Charles Woodson Michigan
1998 Ricky Williams Texas
1999 Ron Dayne Wisconsin
2000 Chris Weinke Florida State
2001 Eric Crouch Nebraska
2002 Carson Palmer USC
2003 Jason White Oklahoma
2004 Matt Leinart USC
2005 Reggie Bush USC
2006 Troy Smith Ohio State

The Heisman Trophy is not about who has the most pro potential. It is who is the most outstanding player in college football for that year.

I know that. But it isn't an oustanding player award; it is a popularity contest. I was just saying that the best atheletes in college do well in the pros. And more times than not the players who are products of a system or get the most coverage media wise get the trophy. Players like Eddie George and Carson Palmer make the transition because of there outstanding ability. If it is an outstanding award then Ginn Jr should have been considered over Smith last year. I would like to see a player win the heisman and carry on his success into the pros. The best atheletes should win the trophy, and they dont. Bottom line.

Ginn? He's an oustanding athlete and faster than most people on the field. However, he wasn't even close to the best player or performer for Ohio State last year. You take away Troy Smith and Ohio State wins 7-8 games. What was Ginn outstanding at? Outrunning people? I agree that sometimes the award is given to players that don't deserve it, however just because they are products of a system (i.e. Wuerffel), doesn't mean they don't deserve the trophy. It's not that players fault that he doesn't have pro qualities like a Tim Tebow but he dang sure should win the Heisman this year because he performed weekly better than any other player in the country. The best athletes should not necessarily win the trophy or Tony Gonzales would have won it for Cal or Matt Jones would have at Arkansas. They have to consistently play at their highest level. Who do you disagree with on this list and tell me who should have won it?

2000 Chris Weinke Florida State

should have been:

LaDainian Tomlinson, RB, TCU
2000 rushing totals
359-2158, 22 TDs

Right, because of the quality of competition is the same. Just because you put up great numbers doesn't mean you should win the Heisman. Then it should've been Brennan last year. And this year it should be Matt Forte from Tulane. He's rushed for 2,000 yards too. I've never heard one person argue for LT before. He wasn't even a finalist. If anyone should've won it that year, it should've been Josh Huepel from Oklahoma. You're viewpoint is skewed and makes no sense.

I would be totally ok with Huepel winning it that year.Without him OK wouldn't have had near the success. Weinke was a product of a system. I just think the player should transcend the team, the hype, and be recognized as the best player in football. If the voters voted like that then I don't think you would have a Heisman curse. I agree that pro-potential should not be judged for the voting case and point Crouch. He was the best player but everyone knew his pro career wouldn't pan out. That being said, I think the lack of pro success shows the facade of the Heisman Hype. That is all I'm saying.

I think Tebow should win it! If McFadden doesn't. What do you think?

Weinke's stat line from his senior year...

266-431 61% 4167 yards 33 touchdowns
ACC player of the year while leading his team to two National Championship games winning one, and lost the other and his best Wide Receiver Snoop Minis didn't play. Ummm so he shouldn't have won The Heisman why again?
